Psychological needs and meaning of employment

In this research project we scrutinize the psychological meaning of employment by analyzing how well employment satiates central psychological needs, for example the need for autonomy, the need for competence, or the need for stimulation. In order to do this, employed people are asked in a series of studies to remember events from the realm of work as well as events from other live domains. The inquiry for the live events is asked in a way that ensures a high variation with regard to the importance and the emotional tone of the events. Participants are then asked to rate the degree of psychological need fulfillment during the events. This gives us the opportunity to compare work-related need fulfilment with need fulfillment that happens out of work. We can thus shed some light on one important aspect of the psychological meaning of work and employment, i.e. the degree to which important psychological needs are satiated.
